President's Message
Last year has been eventful for CCCSA. There were many occasions to provide thoughts and challenges in keeping issues with past and future events. CCCSA’s website is a means of communication with the membership and it is hoped that we can come up with ideas for the future of CCCSA. There are many important issues about the future which requires resolution.
150th Anniversary of the First Chinese Landing in Robe on 16th Jan 2007 was a grand affair. CCCSA was very honoured to be a major participant in this Event which was well attended by the local and business community.
CCCSA Chinese New Year 2007 was a great success. Central to the CNY organising committee we need more assistance in this area in terms of sponsorships and assistance. The Committee worked remarkably well under the Chair of Major Events Mr Kok Wah See. Next year’s CNY Celebration Dinner will be on Feb 16th 2008.
Our Chinese website played a significant role for CCCSA. Edmund spoke of the update in the last Committee meeting in October. We hope to expand our network throughout the global Chamber network with our CCCSA’s news rendered in both English and Chinese. The pattern will be continued.
Seminar events are always a popular form of awareness in the existence of CCCSA. Essentials of Doing Business with China conducted in both English and Chinese by Madam Lui was widely acclaimed. We will start our dialogue with the China Embassy, Department of Trade and Economic Development to bring in another Guest speaker for 2008.
Development work in Trade Missions is slowly manifesting its rewards. 2007 saw the following trade missions to INTRADE Malaysia, 9th World Chinese Entrepreneurs’ Convention in Kobe Japan, the Shenyang Trade Fair, 4th Global Media Conference Chengdu and the 11th Asia Pacific Publication Trade Mission.
Following the success of the trade missions Trade MOUs were signed with The Federated Chinese Chamber of Commerce Malaysia, Shandong Chamber of Commerce and the Xian Chamber of Commerce. CCCSA will pursue this with other trading countries/ provinces in 2008.
As a prelude to our discussion, the committee’s view on our revised Constitutions and the appointment of Honorary Advisers to the management Committee is instrumental to the advancement of CCCSA. This I will need your full support.
Another exciting idea is the implementation of OHS&W Seminars for Chinese SMEs (small and medium enterprises) with our partner Acelin Institute and SafeWork. A relationship as such is a benefit to the community; commercial and cultural. I can see us working with a few organizations with this event.
CCCSA requires funds to maintain its activities. The sources include membership fees, grants, sponsorships and donations. This year DTED is most supportive with our commercial projects and approved $42000 for MAP grants so far.
We are thankful to the many for their support and cooperation; Department of Trade and Economic Development, Adelaide University, University South Australia, Adelaide Festival Centre, Citcsa, Austrade, ANZ Bank, Westpac, SkyCity and other developing ones in the pipeline.
The Committee is to be thanked for their brilliant input this year. Special mention should be made of Mr Kok Chin Khut who will not be continuing his work with us as a committee. Thank you for a most memorable time with you at CCCSA. Mr Khut however will be available to assist us in our accounts. Special thanks to Christina Seelinger who will also relinquish her role as Vice President to be a first time mum . We wish her well. Thank you for all your efforts and assistance. Christina will also be available to advise the Chamber on important issues as the need arises.
May 2008 be another eventful year for CCCSA. Merry Christmas to all.
Janet Chin

6 October to 14 October 2008
Beijing / Jinan / Shanghai / Hangzhou
Singapore Airlines touched down Beijing International Airport at 1130 p.m on the 6th Oct 2008. We have been travelling for the last 48hrs; headed straight for our luggage, EXIT to currency exchange. Australia dollar exchanging at 4.3.
At 7 a.m. on the 7th Oct, there was breaking news that "AUSTRALIA'S central bank will slash interest rates by one percentage point amid fears of a global slowdown sparked by the US-based financial crisis".
Welcome to our selling South Australia in China!
AustCham in Beijing (pop 22mil) hosted our first seminar. Premier Mike Rann gave a very impressive speech highlighting South Australia coming as 4th in the Frazer Institute of Mining Survey out of a jurisdiction of 68 worldwide. China immediately knew where our delegation was from.
Education in South Australia became the top priority for our Chinese attendees, followed by Venture Capital Investment for the next "boom town". It was easy to sell.
Beijing & Shanghai (pop 25mil) seminars and networking sessions went into overdrive. There were queries of cost of living (and at 7th Oct rate) with many admitting it was cheap.
The Jinan Planetary Session in the Province of Shandong our sister-state (pop 96 mil) introduced the Mining sectors to our mineral resources, business communities and our aeromagnetic survey invention; again scoring points from their School of Geology to send students to our Centre of Exploration, Adelaide University. Special thanks to our keynote speaker Jason Kuchel and everyone on the panel.
Food and Wine took centre stage as well. Many of the Chinese companies did their homework and when we met up again at dinnertime were able to tell "us" of South Australia's pristine waters and fresh seafood. Amazing what a drop in OZ dollar can do overseas!
AND, I am glad we will be networking with our first return Shandong Delegation of 25 delegates on 27th Oct organised by DTED.
My impression is "China can and will buy from us if only the State of South Australia is willing to sell". Let's hope it happens.

On Saturday 16th Feb 2008 Chinese Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 19th Chinese New Year black tie Dinner based on the theme "towards a greener Australia". Chair of the organising Committee Mr Kok Wah See welcomed the 310 guests to the Ballroom at Hyatt Hotel. Mr See spoke on the importance of sustainable energy as we enter year 4706 by the Chinese calendar year. He said our actions of today perhaps can best be described as of what our future generation would like from us.
"You are alive at a pivotal moment in humanity's development.
You are making some of the most important choices in human history.
Your era is marked by positive and negative potentials of such newness and magnitude that you can hardly understand them.
Through your public policies and daily lives, the people of your era have tremendous power to influence the future course of humanity's story.
We strongly care about your choices, of course, since we benefit or suffer from them quite directly.
We live downstream from you in time; whatever you put into the stream flows on to our era."
Alan Tough
